Today, I decorate my tree with a mixture of ornaments. I tend to gravitate towards blown glass and mercury style ornaments because they remind me of Christmases past. Of course, I have all the ornaments my kids made through the years and some special occasion ornaments too. It’s really a hodge-podge but I love it!
I have gone to making small themed Christmas trees for other areas of my home that reflect a hobby, passion or topic that I or someone in the family is crazy about. I place them all over the house — guest rooms, bathrooms, family room, dining room — you name it and there’s a tree in there. I change them up periodically, as well. These small 2ft to 4ft trees just add to the holiday season for me!
In the past, I have had a Paris tree (pictured left), a golfing tree, a Coca-Cola tree, a school spirit tree, a girly-girl tree (my daughter’s), a retro style tree and many more. I think this year I will add a mercury glass ornament tree to the mix.
I like to use the Alpine style trees because they are tall and skinny and don’t take up much space. Either a pre-lit or one that only needs 1 strand of 50 lights is perfect. Then I find ornaments and items that celebrate the specific theme I am going for. It really is a lot of fun!
I have found some awesome mercury style glass ornaments that I will get to decorate this new small tree. True, vintage mercury glass ornaments are hard to come by because they were so fragile but the new ones are just as pretty and will celebrate my love for anything vintage. Aren’t they gorgeous?
If you really want vintage mercury glass ornaments, look at eBay. They have a nice selection! Be careful though. Some sellers don’t know what they have and list “mercury glass ornaments” for blown glass ornaments. Both are gorgeous but different. Know what you are shopping for and bidding on.
I love eBay for small items like this. If you look around carefully and use the advanced search feature, you will be surprised at how much is out there. Have fun!
